- Determine where the drywall was manufactured – US and Canadian drywall are safest
- Use moisture resistant drywall on walls and ceilings of rooms subject to high humidity
- Use fire resistant drywall on ceilings
- Do not use moisture resistant drywall (sometimes called green board) in showers – instead use products specifically designed for wet areas like cement board. It is also a good practice to install 6 Mil plastic over the framing before installing the cement board to prevent water penetration.
- While galvanized metal cornerbead is a popular product, it can rust, it frequently cracks along the edges, and takes multiple coats to finish properly. Pre-taped PVC cornerbead with tapered edges offer a superior finished corner. They are adhered to the drywall with compound so they are stronger, adjustable, and won’t crack. They also won’t rust and can be finished in fewer coats.
- Use of “knock down” texture on ceilings and/or walls hides a multitude of imperfections and gives an upscale look
- Use of “orange peel” texture is frowned upon because of adhesion problems. The same look can be achieved with a thick nap roller cover and paint.
